“Finally,” Lon Simmons Said, “the Giants have a ballpark that looks like San Francisco.”
Take your pick of reasons why: The waters of San Francisco Bay lapped up against the right field port walk, reminding fans of the City’s fortuitous natural geography. The upper decks afforded views of the Berkeley and Oakland hills, accentuating the handsome topography of the Bay Area. The brick exterior running down King Street recalled the architectural past of a city that thrived for 150 years. The views of the Bay Bridge from the right field wall… the sight of ferries docking in center field… the stream of Giants fans walking across the wooden planks of Lefty O’Doul Bridge over McCovey Cove… it all combined to create the heady ambiance of the City, as if this gleaming new ballpark were as integral to the town as City Hall or Coit Tower. – San Francisco Giants: 50 Years
