TODAY’S GAME…The San Francisco Giants visit the Chicago Cubs in the 1st game of this 3-game series…Giants’ left-hander Madison Bumgarner (14-8, 2.93) will face Cubs’ right-hander Chris Volstad (1-9, 6.28).

BRANDON BELTING…IF Brandon Belt went 4-for-5 last night in Houston, his 2nd 4-hit game this month…according to Elias, he’s one of 5 NL players with two 4-hit games in August, joining Andre Ethier, Stephen Lombardozzi, Cameron Maybin and teammate, Angel Pagan.

AUGUST PLEASE DON’T GO…The Giants have enjoyed their best month of the season thus far, going 18-10 this month, tied with the Nationals for the best winning pct. in the NL…SF’s 18 wins this month are the most they’ve had in one month since Sept. 2010 (18).

CENTRAL COMMAND…SF has posted a 25-13 (.658) record against NL Central opponents this season, going 16-6 at home and 9-7 on the road…SF’s .658 winning pct. against NL Central teams ranks as the 2nd-best in the NL this season behind the Nationals (.714, 20-8).

INSIDE THE SERIES…The Giants have won 14 of their last 21 games against Chicago, including wins in each of their last 5 games…SF’s current 5-game win streak against the Cubs is their longest since a 7-game win streak from June 17-Aug. 25, 1999.

NO SLEEPING IN…The next four games the Giants play, including today, will be day games (all 3 in this series and on Monday on Labor Day)…San Francisco is 26-27 in day games this season, going 16-12 at home and 10-15 on the road.

HOME VS. ROAD…SF is averaging just 3.45 runs per game (224 runs in 65 games) at AT&T Park this season, which ranks as the 2nd-lowest average in the big leagues ahead of only Seattle (3.19)…however, on the road, the Giants are averaging 5.17 runs per game (341 runs in 66 games), the highest figure in the Majors.

- Former Giants farmhand rejoins organization after signing one year deal in January…has had up and down career in Majors as he has gone 24-29 with 7 saves and 3.94 ERA (204er, 466.1ip) as starter (49 games) and reliever (162 games) for San Diego (2005-08) and Florida (2010-11).
- Surrendered Barry Bonds’ 755th home run to tie Hank Aaron’s all-time record on July 25, 2007.
- Was originally drafted by Giants in 8th round of 2002 First Year-Player Draft…was then traded to San Diego along with pitcher R.D. Spiehs in exchange for pitcher Matt Herges on July, 13, 2003.
