Happy Birthday – Brett Pill
Here are some Giants Gems for Brett Pill’s birthday from the 2012 Giants Media Guide – Happy Birthday Brett!
- Mike Pill, Brett’s father, was chosen by Pirates in the second round out of high school and pitched in the minor-leagues. When his father died suddenly of a heart attack, he left behind a tree business that supported Mike’s mother and his six siblings. (Mike’s father bought the business – Glendora Tree Surgery – after immigrating to the States from Germany.) So Mike left baseball to take over the family business.
- Brett began playing organized baseball at age 4 at the field across the street from his grandmother. Dad coached every year. He always stressed to them that getting to the pros is an extreme longshot so do well in school and make sure you’re playing ball because you enjoy it.
- Brother Tyler is six years younger. Also went to Cal State Fullerton. Drafted as a pitcher in 2011 in fourth round by Mets.
- In his first major-league at-bat on September 6, 2011, Pill hit a home run, the first Giant to do so since Will Clark in 1986. Bochy kept him in the lineup the next day – and he hit another home run. He became one of only 16 players in the divisional era to hit homers in his first two Major League games.
