The Giants hosted the annual Play Ball Lunch today at the Hilton in downtown San Francisco.  A fundraiser for the Giants Community Fund, fans were able to join the players and coaches for a reception and luncheon.  Jr. Giants players were invited as special guests, each getting to sit with a player and enjoy lunch.

Thats my son Caleb Day with Buster Posey. Caleb plays for Atwater Jr Giants. Posey is his favorite player, great he got to have lunch with him. Buster was great. Caleb told me he cant. believe he ate lunch with Buster Posey. Great experience

My son was there too, and he can’t believe the experience. He told us Buster told him, ” you kindda look like me” and he does…. He traded fruit for salad with Madison. He had his and his brother SF Giants jersey autographed by some of the players.

absolutely adorable!

Was Gene Tate inducted into The Junior Giants Hall of Fame at this event? Gene has done great work with the Junior Giants in East Palo Alto and Las Vegas.

Hey Dave, Gene Tate was inducted into the Junior Giants Hall of Fame at the Play Ball Lunch in a previous year. After each class is inducted, the inductees are thereafter invited to the luncheon each year as a special guest of the Giants Community Fund. Gene attended this year’s event and congratulated his longtime friend Ray Askew of East Palo Alto for joining him as a Hall of Famer.

I talked to Gene today and he told me that he had been inducted 5 years ago and that Ray was inducted this year. I went to high scholl with both Gene and Ray and have stayed in contact with them through supporting Junior Giants programs in both East Palo Alto and Las Vegas. Ray Askew led the South Peninsula Athletic League in rushing in 1960 on a last place Ravenswood High school football team playing behind a very outmanned and undersized offensive line.
