TONIGHT’S GAME…The San Francisco Giants host the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1st game of this 3-game series…Giants’ right-hander Tim Lincecum (8-14, 5.21) will face Dodgers’ right-hander Josh Beckett (1-1, 2.92).

ON THE SHORES OF McCOVEY COVE…The Giants will play 13 of their final 25 regular season games here at AT&T Park…SF has gone 38-30 (.559) at home this season for the 6th-best home record in the NL…however, the Giants have lost 14 of their last 21 games here and have won just one home series in their last 6 sets.

THE GIANTS… Are 1-2 on this 6-game, 7-day homestand against AZ and LA… Enter tonight’s game with a season-high 4.5 game lead over the Dodgers in the NL West… Haven’t been as many as 5.5 games ahead in the division since a 15.5 game lead at the conclusion of the 2003 regular season.

TODAY’S TRANSACTIONS…Prior to tonight’s game, the Giants have reinstated OF Justin Christan (left wrist sprain) from the 15-day disabled list…they have also purchased the contract of RHP Yusmeiro Petit (#52) from triple-A…the corresponding 40-man move will be announced prior to tonight’s game.

DAN RUNLZER… 27-year-old missed the 1st 2+ months of the 2012 season w/ left latissimus dorsi strain which he aggravated during spring training…originally hurt it in last regular season game in 2011.

BRAD PENNY… Was reinstated from DL on Sept. 1 after missing 16 games w/ right shoulder impingement… Had his contract purchased from triple-A Fresno on June 29… Is pitching out of the bullpen for the 1st time in his career.

BUSTER POSEY… His .385 avg. leads the Majors and his .458 OBP ranks 2nd since the break while his .630 slugging pct. ranks 4th and his 42 RBI are tied for 4th-most.

San Francisco 4, Los Angeles-NL 1
Scottsdale, Ariz. – The Giants defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 today at Scottsdale Stadium. RHP Yusmeiro Petit (1-0, 0.00), making his first Cactus League start, tossed 5.0-shutout innings while allowing just 4 hits and recording 4 strikeouts to earn the victory. RHPs Santiago Casilla (0.96) and Clay Hensley (2.89) each tossed scoreless innings of relief and RHP Jean Machi (2.00) picked up his 2nd save of the spring with a scoreless 9th. SS Brandon Crawford (.333) hit a solo home run in the 2nd inning and RF Nate Schierholtz (.220) provided insurance runs in the 8th with a 2-run shot, his first homer of the spring.
Tomorrow the Giants will travel to Surprise to take on the Texas Rangers at 6:05 p.m. RHP Matt Cain (2-0, 1.32) is scheduled to start for San Francisco.
