GIANTS-PIRATES OR GIANTS-CARDINALS… The Giants will play either the Pirates or Cardinals in the one-game wild-card round on Wednesday (site still TBD), with these last four games deciding home field advantage… SF trails the Pirates by 1.0 game for first wild-card position… however, the Pirates hold the tie-breaker for home field advantage should both teams end in a tie…Pittsburgh is just 1.5 games behind St. Louis for the NL Central crown and the Giants hold the tiebreaker for home-field advantage over St. Louis should both teams end in a tie.

HOME COOKING… The Giants have won 10 of their last 12 home contests and have been one of the best teams at home beginning July 30, going 14-5 (.737)…only the Cardinals (.759, 22-7) and Padres (.750, 21-7) have been better at home since that date among NL teams.

IN CONTROL… Yusemiro Petit has faced 62-consecutive batters without going to a three-ball count, which dates back to an intentional walk to Corey Dickerson on Sept. 2. at COL…in fact, he is just the second pitcher to face 62+ consecutive batters without going to a three-ball count this season, joining Chad Qualls who went 71-straight batters from April 29-June 28…Petit is the first starting pitcher to do so since Cliff Lee went 66-straight batters from Sept. 16-27, 2013 (STATS, LLC).

PANIK’S FIVE HITS… IF Joe Panik became the sixth Giants rookie to record at least five hits in a game last night, going a perfect 5-for-5 (all singles)…however, he did not score a run, record a RBI and had no extra base hits…at 23 years old, he became the youngest player with that line in any game since Hank Aaron in 1958 (Aug. 27, 1958 at SF) (Elias)…no player had ever recorded at least five hits without scoring or driving in a run since RBI became an offcial statistic in 1920 (Elias).

PETIT PUTTING UP HISTORIC STRIKEOUT/WALK NUMBERS… RHP Yusmeiro Petit struck out nine without issuing a walk in his complete-game 5-1 victory over the Diamondbacks last night…in nine games (three starts) since July 26, Petit has struck out 39 batters and issued just one walk…according to the Elias Sports Bureau, only two other pitchers in the modern era (since 1900) have recorded as many as 39 strikeouts and as few as one walk over any nine-game span…Greg Maddux had overlapping spans of 49/1 and 45/0 K/BB in 2001 and David Wells struck out 42 with just one walk over nine consecutive outings spanning the 2002 and 2003 seasons.

PETIT MAKES HISTORY… RHP Yusmeiro Petit retired the first eight Rockies batters yesterday to extend his streak to 46 consecutive batters retired, setting a Major League record, one better than Mark Buehrle’s streak in 2009…Petit’s streak extended over eight games against eight different teams over 38 days and he faced 42 different batters.

MORE ON YUSMEIRO’S STREAK… Petit struck out 21 batters during the streak and he went to a three-ball count only once, when facing Colorado’s Justin Morneau in the 1st inning yesterday…Petit still has another streak going, as he’s struck out 27 batters since last allowing a walk (to Ryan Howard on July 22), the longest current streak of that kind in the big leagues (Elias).
