ROAD OPENERS… The Giants kick the season off on the road for the fifth consecutive year and the 23rd time in the last 30 seasons…since moving to the West Coast in 1958, the Giants are 20-15 in lid-lifters on the road…the Giants have not won an Opener on the road since 2010 (SF @ HOU).
TODAY’S GAME… The San Francisco Giants visit the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opening game of the 2014 season… LHP Madison Bumgarner (2013: 13-9, 2.77 ) is slated to face D-Backs’ RHP Brandon McCarthy (2013: 5-11, 4.53).
BIG OFFSEASON MOVES… The Giants re-signed RHP Tim Lincecum (two-year contract extension), LHP Javier Lopez (three-year contract extension), and OF Hunter Pence (! ve-year contract extension), then signed RHP Tim Hudson (two-year contract) and OF Mike Morse (one-year contract).
THE SKIPPER… Manager Bruce Bochy is entering his eighth year at the helm of the Giants…SF has posted a 579-555 record during his seven-year tenure… His 1,530 victories are the highest total by any active manager and he leads all active big league skippers in consecutive years managed.
BUMGARNER GETS THE START… Madison Bumgarner is the third youngest left-hander to start a season opener in Giants franchise history (since 1883)…only Ledell “Cannonball” Titcomb (21 years and 242 days of age on April 20, 1888 at Washington) and Mark Davis (23 years and 167 days of age on April 3, 1984 vs. Chicago-NL) were younger than Bumgarner (courtesy of Bill Arnold).
GIANTS AT ARIZONA… The Giants open the 2014 campaign with a four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field…today’s Giants-D-Backs tilt will mark just the second meeting of these two club’s on Opening Day since the D-Backs’ inaugural season in 1998…the only time these two teams met to start a new season was in 2012.
On Wednesday, we hosted our annual Media Day event, inviting members of the media out to AT&T Park to see what’s new for the 2014 season. The commercials were screened, the giveaways were models, the Gotham Club was toured and new food offerings were sampled.
New types of hot dogs
To kick off the 2014 season, the San Francisco Giants and Manager Bruce Bochy, Giants broadcasters, alumni and executives joined over 1,000 fans at the Giants Community Fund’s annual Play Ball Lunch presented by Blue Shield of California. 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of Junior Giants, the flagship program of the Giants Community Fund. The entire 2014 Giants team was in attendance. A select number of Junior Giants players from local leagues had the opportunity to sit with a Giants player or coach during the luncheon.
